What is
keto
Keto, short
for ketogenic, refers to a diet that is high in fat, moderate in protein, and
low in carbohydrates. The primary goal of the keto diet is to put the body in a
state of ketosis, where it burns fat for energy instead of carbohydrates.
Normally,
when you eat carbohydrates, your body breaks them down into glucose, which is
used as the primary source of energy. However, when you restrict carbohydrates
on a keto diet, your body starts to break down fat into molecules called
ketones, which can be used as an alternative fuel source.
To achieve
ketosis, the keto diet typically restricts carbohydrate intake to around 20-50
grams per day, or about 5-10% of total calories. This means that most of the
calories come from fat sources, such as meat, fish, nuts, seeds, and oils.
Protein intake is generally moderate, with most people aiming for around 15-25%
of total calories.
The keto
diet has been studied for its potential benefits in weight loss, blood sugar
control, and other health conditions. However, it may not be suitable for
everyone, and it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before
starting any significant dietary change. Additionally, some people may
experience side effects when starting a keto diet, such as constipation,
fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.
